Homework 1
Question 1
Answer the following questions briefly.
a) Emergent property is a key feature for a complex system. Please use few words to define the emergent property. Please give an example of men-made-complex system that exhibits the emergent property. Briefly explain why you regard it as the emergent property.
b) According to INCOSE or NASA Systems Engineering (SE) handbook, there are several stages for SE. What are these stages? Which stages determine the most part of the total cost of the whole system?
c) Read the example of interior design in Lecture 1. Draw a control diagram of the system you have reported in question (a).
Question 2
Please read the examples of Functional Flow Diagram given in Lecture notes and also examples given in section 4.3 in NASA SE Handbook.
- Most of people has the experience of losing their cell phone. Can you design a system which can help people to retrieve their phone in a functional design level? (at least it should have 6 functional parts which has input and output) Draw the FFDB and write few words to explain how it works. (Note that it may not be just a software in your phone, this is a product which can be used in any phone or other valuable personal belongings.)
- Draw the N2 chart based on your FFDB flow chart.
Question 3
In lecture of requirement analysis, we have discussed the case that a company want to develop a sports training monitoring systems to help professional sports athlete. You can also search the related products and documents on the web to know more about this system. Except the athlete and trainer, please identify two other stakeholders related to this systems. Design 3 questions for each of three stakeholders to explore their needs and expectations. For each of the question, please describe your objective (why you ask this question).
Question 4
- In QFD, how to determine the priority of different technical requirements?
- Read the example “QFD_frig_example”, compute the weights of each technical descriptors, list three most important technical descriptors and three least important technical descriptors, please give some reason.
- Draw a ‘house of quality’ table of QFD in Question 3 (there are at least 5 customer requirements and 5 technical (engineering) characteristics) use the excel template.

Use your own language to explain the system architecture and design process.

Suppose you are assigned a job to develop a new portable charger (mobile battary) for mobile phone. Use the TRIZ methods to finish your concept design. (Find two contradict technical points. Find the solution in the TRIZ table)
